Schedule questions
How do I know which class is right for me or my child?
Tell us your age or your child's age and experience, and we will point you to the right class. Little Dragons serves ages 4-8. Kids MMA and Kids MMA & Athletic Training serve ages 6-12. Youth MMA and Youth MMA & Athletic Training serve ages 11-17. On Saturdays, the 11:15am class is Youth-Teen-Adult MMA for ages 13 and up, all levels, and 11 and 12 year olds train in Kids MMA at 10:30am. Placement also considers experience and maturity.
Can I start any week, or do I have to wait for a new block to begin?
You can start any week. Classes run on an ongoing schedule and new people join continually, so there is no cohort to wait for.
Do you have morning classes?
Yes. Women's Only Strength & Kickboxing runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00am. Most other classes run in the late afternoon and evening, and the full grid is on the schedule.
How soon can I get in?
Often the same day or within a day or two, depending on the class. Texting usually gets the fastest reply.
What happens if I miss a class?
You attend another one that week instead. Memberships are not locked to a single class time: you can attend any class that matches your age group and membership level, so if you normally come on a Monday and cannot make it, another eligible class later in the week works just as well.
Where do I park and which entrance do I use?
Enter Parking Garage D next to Twin Peaks, drive through the middle of the garage toward the front, park anywhere and come through our black doors. You do not need to walk through the mall. If you are already inside Coastland Center, head to the center and turn at the Zales entrance.
Do I need to book, or can I just show up?
Please contact us before coming in. We want to know who is arriving, what program you are interested in, and which class or starting process fits you best. If you are bringing a child, their age and experience can also affect which class we recommend.
Booking ahead gives our staff and coaches time to prepare for your visit, place you correctly, and make sure you are not arriving for the wrong class. You can call, text, email, or message us through social media. We will help you choose the right starting point.
Can I watch a class before joining one?
Yes. You are welcome to stop by and watch before deciding whether to train.
Who can join Teen & Adult MMA (Advanced)?
Teens and adults with at least two to three years of prior martial arts training. Enrollment is open, and it starts with a conversation with the coach about your current level, because this class includes real MMA and sparring. If you are newer to MMA, the Saturday Youth-Teen-Adult MMA class welcomes ages 13 and up, including beginners, and Co-Ed Kickboxing is another option for striking without sparring.
Is there an adult MMA class?
Yes, two. Youth-Teen-Adult MMA runs Saturday at 11:15am for ages 13 and up, all levels, beginners welcome. Teen & Adult MMA (Advanced) runs Monday and Wednesday at 6:30pm and requires at least two to three years of prior martial arts training and a conversation with the coach. Adults who want striking without sparring train in Co-Ed Kickboxing.
Does anything change during season?
If season pushes a kids class to 14-16 students, we add another class time rather than allowing coaching quality to drop. As the academy grows, we will add intermediate and advanced classes for kids who have trained for at least two years. Moving experienced students into those groups creates more room in beginner classes and allows coaches to give newer students the attention they need while building strong foundations. Memberships are not locked to one time, so members can attend another class that matches their age group and membership level. For parking, use Parking Garage D next to Twin Peaks, park anywhere available, and come through our black doors without walking through the mall.
About the Jiu-Jitsu class
Do your jiu-jitsu classes include sparring?
Yes, but not on your first day. You begin with stance, footwork, technique, defense and control, and live training is introduced gradually and only once you have the skills to take part safely. Protective equipment is worn where appropriate, partners are matched by size and experience where possible, and coaches supervise closely.
Will I be thrown in with people far above my level?
No. Classes are matched to experience level, and long-term members consistently note that we cater to all levels.
Am I too out of shape to start jiu-jitsu?
No. Conditioning is something training builds, not something you need before you arrive.
Do I need a gi?
No. Our Jiu-Jitsu class is no-gi, so you train in comfortable athletic clothing rather than a traditional uniform. There is no gi to buy at any point.
What happens in my first jiu-jitsu visit?
You are greeted by staff, given a quick tour, and asked about your goals and experience. Then you train in a real class appropriate to your level, with the coach explaining as you go. You will not be expected to know anything before you arrive.
